Your chapters are the building block of your memoir.

When you flip through a book, apart from words on the pages, what do you see? You see the form of the book—its chapters. Chapters are the visual structure of any book.

When you browse through a book, one of the ways you evaluate it is to read the Table of Contents. What makes up a TOC? All the chapters of the book and their titles. The chapters give you a synopsis of a book and its progression.

Events and scenes are building blocks of a book too. For sure, but they don't exist on their own. Where do they live? In a chapter.

A common challenge I often see with manuscripts are weak chapters. And a weak chapter will always—always— cause your memoir to have a weak narrative drive.

Execute narrative drive well—in every chapter—and your book will be a page-turner.

A chapter is not just a body of information. It has a specific structure that you, as the writer, need to deliver on to provide a page-turner for your reader.

When you have the skill to build a chapter scene-by-scene from the opening line, and you have the skill to end a chapter at just the right place, then you are building a narrative drive that will cause your reader to turn the page.

When you can construct one chapter well, then it is a case of rinse and repeat until your memoir is done.

Constructing a solid chapter is the SURE-FIRE way to turn your memoir into a page-turner.

And developing the skill to build a strong chapter is the #1 way to write a memoir that practically writes itself.

And I'll teach you this!

Because knowing how to write solid chapters that build on each other will save you weeks of rewrites. Never mind the editing costs.

Don't spend another sentence writing in the wrong direction.
